Cargo Shipping To Nepal

Located in South Asia in the Himalayan Mountains, Nepal borders China and India. Sea cargo and ocean freight entering Nepal typically arrives through Calcutta in India.

If you are moving overseas to Nepal or are interested in international sea shipping to Nepal, there is some important information you should learn in advance about shipping to Nepal.

If you are shipping electrical equipment to Nepal, please provide specific details about your electronic devices including year, make and brand information. In addition, if you are shipping new items to Nepal, you should also plan to provide the invoices for these new items.

Other documents you will likely need before cargo shipping to Nepal include:
  • CTD or Customs Transit Declaration for any cargo shipments that are going to be cleared through ports in India
  • A letter authorizing the Destination Agent to clear your shipment
  • Your personal contact information including address and phone number in Nepal
If you are a Diplomat shipping a Diplomatic shipment to Nepal, make sure you obtain a Diplomatic Exemption Certificate issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nepal. You should provide the CIF (cost, insurance, freight) value of your shipment.

If you qualify, you may be able to obtain a Duty Free Exemption Certificate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Again, the CIF value of the shipment will be required for anyone qualifying for this special duty free exemption. This includes most foreign advisors and consultants for the Nepalese Government.

Are you a Foreign National on private contract returning to Nepal for some type of work? If so, you should also plan to provide your passport and a passport for every member of your family that is accompanying you to Nepal. You will also need a certificate from your employer stating your sources of income, and an import licensed that you can obtain through the Department of Commerce in Nepal.

It is important to note that you should plan to send all the necessary documents before your shipment to Nepal (a minimum of at least three to four weeks). Your paperwork should arrive in Nepal before the arrival of your shipment at any Indian Port to avoid any fees for storing cargo over an established length of time and possible delays.

When you are shipping to Nepal, you should arrange to be present when your cargo shipment is going through the customs clearance process. All shipments entering Nepal are inspected by customs officials. Certain people are allowed to ship household goods and personal items to Nepal duty and tax free.

If you qualify for duty free shipping status to Nepal, this special qualification is valid for six months from your arrival date in Nepal. Please note, shipments entering Nepal must be consigned to the owner’s full name and address in Nepal.

Cargo shipments to Nepal are often routed through Calcutta in India. Cargo shipments entering Calcutta are subject to inspection by Indian Customs authorities. Plan to have a Combined Transport Document or CTD.

Shipping to Nepal - Restricted Items and Dutiable Goods

If you are shipping new items to Nepal, you should have an invoice for the items along with a Certificate of Origin document.

Shipping to Nepal - Prohibited Items

As with most regions, there are some items that are prohibited from cargo shipment to Nepal. This includes the following:
  • Drugs
  • Beef and beef products
  • Pornography

Vehicle Shipping to Nepal
